1. What Lanacane is and what it is used for

Lanacane is an anaesthetic cooling cream. The active ingredient is benzocaine. It is formulated to provide fast relief from itching and irritation from conditions such as insect bites and stings, nettle stings, everyday cuts and scrapes, skin chafe, external vaginal and external anal (back passage) itching.

Benzocaine works below the skin surface to anaesthetise sensory nerves, to stop itching and irritation fast and eliminate the urge to scratch.

2. Before you use Lanacane
Do not use LANACANE:
  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to benzocaine or to any of the other ingredients in this product or any local anaesthetics (butyacaine and procaine) or para-aminobenzoic acid, parabens or paraphenylenediamine or to commercial hair dyes. See ‘what Lanacane contains’ for the full list of ingredients.
  • If you are under 12 years of age.
  • On large areas of skin, skin rash, sunburnt, infected or broken skin or on the mouth or eyes. Avoid inhalation.
  • If you have a slow or irregular heart beat.
  • If you have a history of or are suspected to have methemoglobinemia, a rare blood disorder that affects how red blood cells deliver oxygen.
  • With sulphonamides, cholinesterase inhibitors or if you have reduced cholinesterase activity.

Take special care with Lanacane:

Lanacane contains sulfonated castor oil which may cause skin reactions. Lanacane contains perfume with citronellol, benzyl benzoate, geraniol, benzyl alcohol, citral, cinnamal, alcohol, linalool and d-limonene that may cause allergic reactions. Benzyl benzoate and benzy alcohol may cause local irritation.

3. How to use Lanacane

Always use Lanacane exactly as detailed in the instructions. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure how to use the product.

Lanacane is for external use on the skin by adults and children aged 12 years and above.

Before use, pierce the tube seal using the spike on the cap. Apply the cream to the affected area. You can repeat the treatment as needed up to 3 times daily for up to one week. If symptoms persist for more than one week, consult your doctor.

If you accidentally swallow Lanacane, it is unlikely to be harmful, but contact your doctor or pharmacist if you are worried.

If you use/apply more Lanacane than recommended, you may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, headaches, feeling unwell, fatigue, blue or grey skin or lips, dizziness and confusion. If you experience these symptoms, stop using Lanacane and consult your doctor.

If you forget to use Lanacane, do not use a double application to make up for a forgotten treatment. When you remember, apply the cream and continue with the treatment.

You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Lanacane can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. On very rare occasions, the use of Lanacane can result in a skin reaction called sensitivity. Sensitivity can be recognised by reddening of the skin, minor swelling, blistering, or the itch and/or irritation becoming more intense. In the unlikely event that you experience these symptoms, stop using Lanacane and consult your doctor for advice. If you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
