What this medicine is for

An antiseptic gel for the rapid relief of common mouth ulcer pain, which is applied to the inside of the mouth or gums.

This medicine contains a local anaesthetic called lidocaine hydrochloride, which relieves pain and irritation and an antiseptic called Cetylpyridinium chloride, which kills bacteria and helps prevent infection.

It is intended for adults, the elderly, and children over 5 months.

Before you use this medicine
Do not use if:
  • you or your child are allergic to any of the ingredients
  • You or your child are allergic to other local anaesthetics
  • your baby is under 5 months of age
  • you suffer from methaemoglobinaemia (rare blood disorder)

This medicine is not suitable for treatment of teething in babies·

Warning and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if:

you or your child have heart or liver problems

Taking other medicines

This medicine should not be taken when taking medicines treating high blood pressure (propranolol), stomach conditions (cimetidine) or water-retention (diuretics).

Speak to your pharmacist or doctor before taking this product with other medicines, including the following:

  • other local anaesthetics or similar medicines e.g., antiarrhythmic drugs (mexiletine).
  • the antibiotic erythromycin or the antifungal medicine itraconazole

Important Information about some of the ingredients.

This medicine contains 350 mg of alcohol (ethanol) / 1 g of gel (35% v/w). The amount in 0.2 g of this medicine is equivalent to 1.6 ml beer or 1.1 ml wine. The small amount of alcohol in the medicine will not have any noticeable effects. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.

Pregnancy and breast feeding:

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding, speak to your doctor or your pharmacist before using this medicine.

How to use this medicine

Check the tube seal is not broken before first use. If it is, do not use the gel.

Pierce tube seal with end of cap.

Adults and children aged 5 months and over: Apply a small amount of gel to the affected area with a clean finger. This may be repeated after 20 minutes and then every 3 hours during the day if you need to.

Mouth Ulcer Gel is not suitable for treatment of teething in children.

If you miss a dose, just apply a new dose and follow the instructions as before.

If symptoms worsen or do not go away talk to your doctor or dentist.

Do not exceed the stated dose. In the event of an overdose, seek medical advice

Possible side effects

Most people will not have problems, but some may get some.

If you get any of these serious side effects, stop using the gel. See a doctor at once:
  • bluish colouring of the skin, shortness of breath, headache, lack of energy
  • skin rash, itchy or irritated skin

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.

How to store this medicine

Do not store above 25°C.

Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.

Use by the date on the end flap of the carton.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.

Active ingredients

This oral gel contains Cetylpyridinium Chloride 0.02% w/w, Lidocaine 0.6% w/w.

Also contains: purified water, ethanol (33.9 vol %), sucrose, hypromellose, cetomacrogol 1000, star anise oil, eucalyptol, levomenthol.
